If you feel that your child may have an ASD with a PDA Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a term increasingly in use in the UK and Europe. In a population-based group of 85 children with epilepsy four (5%) displayed significant symptoms of PDA. School and parent reports indicated very significant functional impairment and management concerns. The ‘Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire’ (EDA-Q) was developed to measure behaviours reported in clinical accounts of extreme/‘pathological’ demand avoidance (PDA). The questionnaire allowed these traits to be measured consistently for research purposes.

Pathological (or extreme) demand avoidance is a term sometimes applied to complex behaviours in children within—or beyond—autism spectrum disorder. The use of pathological demand avoidance as a diagnosis has, at times, led to altered referral practice and misunderstandings between professionals and the families of patients.

Development of the ‘Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire’ (EDA-Q): preliminary observations on a trait measure for Pathological Demand Avoidance. tim November 18, 2018 BACKGROUND: Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a term increasingly used in the United Kingdom to describe children who obsessively resist everyday demands, going to extreme lengths to avoid these. The ‘Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire’ (EDA-Q) is a measure designed to quantify traits of extreme/‘pathological’ demand avoidance in children aged 5-17, on the basis of parent or teacher-report. The questionnaire was developed to ensure that PDA traits were being measured in a consistent way for research purposes.

Characteristics ascribed to the condition include greater refusal to do what is asked of the person, even to activities the person would normally like. Although the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) did not differentiate PDA from those with ASD plus disruptive behaviour; score on the EDA‐Q was significantly higher in PDA than all comparison groups. ROC analysis indicated good sensitivity (.80) and specificity (.85).

What is PDA? PDA (pathological demand avoidance) is a behaviour profile within the autism spectrum. Autism.org.uk explain’s what PDA is, the characteristics of PDA and how to begin the assessment process. They also look at guidelines for parents and education staff.

The instrument that they have developed is a 26-item parent questionnaire that appears to be easy to use and with preliminary good-excellent psychometric properties. The ‘Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire’ (EDA-Q) is a measure designed to quantify traits of extreme/‘pathological’ demand avoidance in children aged 5-17, on the basis of parent or teacher-report.
